If this occurs, a couple should set an appointment with their Family Practice Doctor or OBGYN to get a final determination of their infertility.

Signs of Infertility - Women
1). The most common sign of infertility in women is an irregular menstrual cycle. It is important to note that an irregular menstrual can mean a number of different things, but, infertility could be one of them.
2). Weight problems, either too thin or obese. For example, women who are very thin or bordering on emaciation lack the general nutrients needed to conceive. In contrast, women who are obese typically develop hormonal problems that negatively affect the reproductive system.
3). Substance abuse and alcoholism also negatively affect the overall health of women. These are causes and not signs, but, they definitely hurt the chances of women to conceive and discourage the proper growth of a fetus.
Signs of Infertility- Men
1). Men typically exhibit both physical and anatomic signs. For example, undescended testicles and or excessive varicose veins on the gonads negatively impact a man’s ability to produce quality sperm.
2). Men are subject to infertility as a result of external causes. Significant heat exposure to the scrota or gonads can kill or seriously damage a man’s sperm. Men need to be aware that tight underwear and pants can create excessive heat in these areas which decreases the quality of the man's sperm.
3). As in the case with women, a man's fertility is also negatively impacted because of weight problems and alcohol or substance abuse. These negative affects ultimately harm a man's body and do not allow him to properly produce sperm.
Before a couple jumps to the conclusion that they are infertile, they need to make sure that they have been having intercourse during the woman's fertile time or ovulating period. Many couples are simply experiencing trouble getting pregnant due to the fact that they are not having intercourse during the correct time of the month. A woman can easily use a home ovulation kit or check her body temperature to make sure she is ovulation or not.

An irregular cycle may be fine, so long as the woman is still ovulating. It does make tracking ovulation a whole lot trickier, so it makes sense to start the testing for the LH surge soon after your period, and keep testing until you see it. The irregular cycle is most problematic if you've got a short luteal phase (the time between ovulation and your next period). That suggests a progesterone deficiency that can make it difficult to sustain a pregnancy.
